THE BOOK

The present work on PRIESTLY MINISTRY AND RESPECT FOR THE INTEGRITY OF CREATION: Festschrift in Honour of Rev. Fr. Egbe Peter Abumhenre edited by Agatha A. Ikhumetse and Peter O. Isesele, is excellent and well-conceived as it touches the heart of God and reminds humanity of the awesomeness of God embodied in creation. Priestly Ministry, therefore, demonstrates man’s response to divine call whose overall intention is the salvation of mankind and the spread of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

This foreword, therefore, has pointed to the harvest of souls through impressive and committed priestly ministry. It contains a collection of perceptions crystallized as sincere contributions by various authors which will serve future generations intellectual, religious, and social dimensions. The foreword invites persons from all endeavours to imbibe productive ideas, widespread and intelligent imaginations put forward by competent and renowned authors in various specialties. It is quite rewarding and interesting.

LANGUAGE, LINGUISTICS AND LANGUAGE PEDAGOGY by C.U.C. Ugorji

ABOUT THE BOOK

The book discusses language, linguistics and language pedagogy, teaching techniques, computers and ICT in language pedagogies, text development, lesson planning, tools for classroom presentation, techniques in distance learning and the use of internet platforms. It also discusses Standard English, New Englishes, socio- and psycho-linguistics, pronunciation and phonology, grammar, morphology and syntax, language planning and standardisation, among others.

This handy book is a companion to language students, teachers, trainee teachers, as well as students of linguistics. It is particularly important to EFL and ESL in TESOL/IELT programmes, and Communication in English, among others, which aim to impart English language skills to speakers of other languages. It is a comprehensive text within this broad confluence area, interfacing education, language, communication and linguistics, and deals with tools common to this interface; but it is not about pedagogical theories, except for its bias to Task-Based Communicative pedagogies and Learner Autonomy. Eclecticism on the teachers’ part is enjoined.

In dealing with fundamental concepts, the book adopts every-day language, to demystify the technical terms (especially) of linguistics. Accordingly, materials basic to understanding linguistics, language, grammar, pedagogy, theories of language teaching and learning are provided, to guide the practical aspects of teaching, including the requirements to engage in teaching practice, teaching supervision, constructing syllabi, test materials and testing.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

The author is a Professor of Linguistics and English language, and the Head/Chair of Linguistics Studies, University of Benin. He holds a PhD in English Linguistics from the Faculty of English, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poland, and researches on English and African Linguistics, Phonology and Sociolinguistics, which impact language pedagogy. He has lectured across cultures in Europe and Africa, including the University of Augsburg, Germany, and the University of Benin, Nigeria. He is also a professional teacher, and teacher trainer, committed to TESOL programmes and text development, and the founding Editor, Coaxial Journal of Linguistics Studies and Editor-in-Chief, Nigerian Journal of Phonetics and Phonology.

A CULTURAL HISTORY OF THE UVWIE PEOPLE OF THE NIGER DELTA by WILFRED FOME AKEMU

cover - A Cultural History Of The Uvwie People Of the Niger Delta

THE BOOK

In March 2015, we published on the platform of The Uvwie History Project the book: A History Of The Uvwie People Of The Western Niger Delta by Wilfred Fome Akemu and Gbegbaje – Das I which “is a compendium of the origin, religious worship and resistance to colonialism, traditional, social and economic activities which gave rise to modern developments in Uvwieland”.

The authors of the first book began a process of mining the history of Uvwie. The second book is a continuation of that process. If the first book was a symphony, the second one is a sonata. The latter deals mainly with the culture (the way of life) of the Uvwie people. It peeps into the political, social, economic and technological aspects of culture in the pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial eras in Uvwieland.

The introduction of British colonialism in the late nineteenth century made Uvwie to become part of modern-day Nigeria which was created by the amalgamation of the Protectorates of Northern and Southern Nigeria in 1914. Since then foreign cultural pins like changes in the system of governance, dress codes, diets, Uvwie traditional architecture, economic activities and language have been inserted in the traditional culture. In response, the Uvwie traditional culture has strived to be assertive, on the one hand, and accepted to be an undercurrent, on the other hand.

Uvwie was a clan until 1954 when it became a Kingdom with the introduction of monarchy and Johnson Ejuvwiekoko Edjekohwo Eruohwo was crowned as Eruphwo II, the Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom on 1st December 1954. Political reforms have also made Uvwie a local government in the Delta State of Nigeria. Uvwie is being governed by the government of Delta State, the Uvwie Local Government, and the Uvwie Monarchy which is responsible for the traditional governance of the Uvwie Kingdom subject to the constitution of Nigeria and other laws.

ANU: An Agonizing Tale of a Girl-Child by Deede Dumka Deede

cover - anu

“Nice story, and a voice for the girl-child”

– His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Amb. Uyi Igbe

(Nigeria’s Ambassador to Mozambique)

“Deede pictures our society in such a real way that this Book reminds us of the need to protect the African Child, and correct certain ills in our society. It is a powerful masterpiece”

– Mrs. Ikwuemosi A. Osayande

(Chief Magistrate, Edo State)

Anu is a teenage girl, living with albinism, and going through severe hardship, pain and trauma. The story takes into account the issues of domestic violence against women and children, espousing the vulnerability of the girl-child in our African society and the world at large.

In addition, it spotlights a few of the many societal issues and anomalies the girl-child is faced with – ranging from rape, child labour, poor standard of education, trafficking to murder – and further strengthens calls for the protection of the girl-child.

Also, it underscores the abject poverty bedeviling a typical, average African parent and society, and examines the nature of our African society, stressing the need for rich, strong family ties and brotherliness, as our African society and the world can only get better with each and every one contributing a quota of kindness to humanity.

– Nwinaene, Vivian-Peace

(Mass Communication Lecturer, Kenule Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori).
